BASEL, Switzerland (AP) – A dazzling second-half display by Delphine Cascarino helped France storm to a 5-2 win over the Netherlands on Sunday, sealing a quarterfinal spot and top place in Group D of the Women’s Euro 2025.
Despite trailing at one point and facing potential elimination, France turned the game around in spectacular fashion, with Cascarino’s stunning three-minute blitz turning the tide.
🔥 Cascarino’s Game-Changing Magic
Cascarino, frustrated by a quiet first half, took the game into her own hands in the second.
“I was really frustrated in the first half because I barely touched the ball. So I was determined to do much better in the second,” she said post-match.
-
In the 61st minute, she snatched the ball at midfield and set up Marie-Antoinette Katoto for a tidy finish.
-
Just three minutes later, she scored herself with a powerful solo run and a rising shot from outside the box.
-
In the 67th minute, Cascarino grabbed her second goal of the night, capitalizing on a rebound after Katoto’s shot hit both goalposts.
Sakina Karchaoui added a penalty in stoppage time to complete the rout.
France coach Laurent Bonadei praised Cascarino’s impact:
“At some point you have to light the fire so she can show her full potential.”
🇳🇱 Netherlands Eliminated, Jonker Exits
The Netherlands, 2017 Euro champions, are out of the tournament. The defeat also marked the end of coach Andries Jonker’s tenure. He had already been informed before the Euros that he would not continue after the tournament.
Jonker refused to comment on the Dutch football federation:
“I don’t want to say anything… That’s all I’m going to say about it.”
Despite their aggressive start and a 2-1 lead at one point—courtesy of goals by Victoria Pelova and an own goal by Selma Bacha—the Dutch could not hold off the French resurgence.
