PM Modi's UK Visit Aims to Strengthen Strategic Ties and Boost Global Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached London on Wednesday evening for a two-day official visit to the United Kingdom (July 23–24), marking his fourth visit to the UK. The visit comes at the invitation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as both nations look forward to deepening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).

🇮🇳🤝🇬🇧 A Global Vision for Cooperation

Upon arrival, PM Modi shared a message on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the significance of the India-UK relationship:

“Landed in London. This visit will go a long way in advancing the economic partnership between our nations. The focus will be on furthering prosperity, growth, and boosting job creation for our people. A strong India-UK friendship is essential for global progress.”

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the visit as a step towards “scripting a new chapter” in India–UK relations, with key engagements scheduled with PM Keir Starmer and a meeting with His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.

🛫 Agenda of the Visit

According to the MEA, the visit will focus on reviewing progress and enhancing cooperation in key sectors under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including:

  • Trade and Economy

  • Technology and Innovation

  • Defence and Security

  • Climate Action

  • Health and Education

  • People-to-People ties

Additionally, discussions will cover regional and global challenges, such as geopolitical stability and mutual security concerns.

📈 India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in Focus

A major highlight of this visit is the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which has been under negotiation for the past three years. If finalized, the FTA is expected to:

  • Remove tariffs on 99% of Indian exports to the UK

  • Reduce duties on 90% of British goods entering India

  • Double bilateral trade volume to $120 billion by 2030

  • Boost UK exports like whisky, automobiles, and pharmaceuticals to Indian markets

👑 Meeting With King Charles III

PM Modi is also expected to meet King Charles III, strengthening the cultural and diplomatic rapport between the two nations. This engagement underlines the deep-rooted historical connections and the evolving role of the monarchy in modern diplomacy.

⚠️ Security Concerns: Khalistani Extremism

During the trip, PM Modi is also likely to raise India’s concerns regarding Khalistani extremist elements operating in the UK.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed:

"We have consistently highlighted the issue of the presence of Khalistani elements and organizations sympathetic to them. It remains a matter of serious concern in our bilateral dialogue.”

🔁 Continuing High-Level Engagement

This visit follows recent interactions between the two leaders, including meetings at the G20 Summit in Brazil and the G7 Summit in Italy (June 2025). Frequent high-level engagements reflect the growing momentum and mutual commitment to strengthen ties in a rapidly changing global landscape.

📌 In Summary

PM Modi’s UK visit is poised to be a turning point in India-UK relations, focusing on mutual growth, strategic cooperation, and global leadership. As the world navigates complex challenges, the collaboration between two major democracies — India and the UK — stands as a pillar for international peace, prosperity, and innovation.
